Nature Canada

INFO

Nature Canada is one of the oldest national nature conservation charities in Canada. For 80 years, Nature Canada has helped protect over 110 million acres of parks and wildlife areas in Canada and countless species.

CONTEXT

I was brought on to propose a new design workflow for Nature Canada while paying respects to their 80 year legacy. This work included a visual guide update and arguing for a more robust user experience while donating.

Critical Question

*While respecting legacy, what would an updated Nature Canada look like?

Nature Canada reached out to me to uplift their exsisting visual communication using a new alternate color pallette and fonts. The solution I proposed needed to be practical, accessible and fit the vision of this legacy brand moving forward. In order to pay respects to legacy I tried to draw from as much legacy media as possible with fonts and graphics drawn from some of their first published materials.

I created a brand guide that reflected and re-enforced good design principals through a united type heirarchy that included accessibility options for First Peoples names of some of the most important parks in Canada. The illustrations much like the brand were designed to invoke legacy and were to be used sparingly in communications to add brand voice.

The Logo of Nature Canada was recently updated in the early 1990's, in a bid to preserve legacy I used the current mark as a jumping off point and used the precedence of versatility in logo design to use the negative space as a way to showcase the imagery of Canada as a way to make use of the negative space in the "N".
